2472 Niles Canyon Excursion
Sunol and Niles, California
May 24, 2008

The sight of a 1920's mainline locomotive negotiating the grade of Niles Canyon was something to behold.  The volunteer groups that make up the Golden Gate Railroad Museum and the Pacific Locomotive Association / Niles Canyon Railway, pulled off an incredible trip into the past.

The following photos were taken during the successful excursion trip on Saturday, May 24th.  The gentleman in the white shirt and black vest, wearing a 2472 cap, is Roy Whittaker, a full time engineer who loves all aspects of railroading.  My nephew may remember him as the GGRM volunteer who gave him a ride around Hunter's Point Naval Shipyard in a caboose.  That really made Derik's day - It seems that in the eyes of a four year old, seeing uncle Mike at the throttle of 2472 simply wasn't as cool as riding in that red caboose!

I have not added captions because I do not know the names of all the hard working individuals that made this trip a huge success.  Nonetheless, I am truly thankful for their dedication and efforts that help to keep steam alive.

Back in May of 2001, Project 2472 was in the backshop for some significant maintenance/repairs.  I really miss the GGRM facility at Hunter's Point, but am thankful that 2472 has found an excellent new home.  See more of my steam photos.
