NNL West 2008
Model Car Contest and Swap Meet
Santa Clara, California
March 1, 2008
The NNL West Model Car Contest and Swap Meet was an amazing experience.  Prior to attending this year's event at the Santa Clara Convention Center, I had not been to a model car contest in over 30 years. One of the highlights of this event was the friendly and approachable nature of this very talented group of model builders.

The following images do not begin to convey the number and variety of cars, motorcycles, and trucks (not to mention people) that were represented at the event.  Rather, these are a narrow selection of those things that caught my eye.  John Teresi's incredible collection of drag cars deservedly receive a lot of space on these pages.  And while the snap together kits generously given out during the "Make and Take" may not be as sophisticated as most of the models on display, they embody the passion for model building all of us share and may well represent a starting point for the next generation of model builders.  The swap tables filled about half of the area and were chock full of kits and parts that had the effect of a time machine - I was able to relive the building of dozens of models from my youth while walking the aisles.  I think there really was something for everyone at this great event.  It has inspired me to pick up a couple of the hobby magazines and check out the selection of cars at the local hobby shop.  I have only one question - What does NNL stand for?

Please forgive any misidentifications of cars or builders - you may send corrections to me at: mike@panyo.com

Some of the cars on display weren't all that well cared for... (Well done!)
Lots of vintage rods were on display
I thought I might share my last effort at building a 1/25 Funny Car.  Up until now, I was too critical of the image quality to share these.  (In fact the images remind me a little of those you see on Ebay when someone is trying to hide something!)Since then I may have improved with the camera, but have not even tried to build a contest quality car.  I built this car 32 years ago for the 1976 Talbot's Toyland model car contest held in San Mateo California.  The model is now long gone (the store is still going strong), but back then, the "Spirit of '76" took best in show and was a car I was really proud of.  I got my driver's license a short while later and haven't built a 1/25th scale car since. Attending the NNL West may have changed all of that...  Thank you all for the inspiring show!
